What does success look like to you?
Having a trusted advisor status with clients is my most important goal, as well as a good indicator of broader success. Trust is not something which is inherent nor typical in the recruitment industry: it is hard won, and also crucial for us to influence hiring and retention outcomes in a positive way.
What is the best part of working in legal recruitment?
I enjoy the calibre of individuals that I get to interact with on a daily basis. We work with both clients and candidates who are intellectually rigorous, most often time-poor and who quite rightly demand efficient solutions within a tricky part of the market.
What is the most unexpected thing you ever did?
Packing up a comfortable life in New Zealand and heading to the other side of the world would have to be right up there!
What can colleagues - and friends - expect when they are around you?
I try to bring a good-humoured approach to recruitment, and in other areas of my life. While what we do is important, I also try to not take myself too seriously. Outside of work, my passions include rugby, getting into the outdoors whenever I can, and the latest hobby is cataloguing the pubs of London.
What motivates you at work and in life?
I enjoy having a sense of collective purpose, be it at work trying to create high performing recruitment teams, or supporting the All Blacks through ups and downs alongside five million other Kiwis. One of my best and worst qualities is my competitiveness, so a deep desire to win underpins most things I do - but it’s always better if you can enjoy the wins and commiserate alongside a bunch of other great humans.
